Bron Sinclair was always a nature lover at heart, having grown up crossing the fields from her Birmingham home to go to school and daily walking her dog through the nearby woods, ponds and pastures. Her father changed his job and the family moved to Kings Norton, Birmingham. Happily for Bron, she still had easy access to the countryside and spent many long hours at the weekends walking with her faithful four-legged companion. Bron went to the College of Advanced Technology, in Birmingham, after passing a number of ‘O’ and ‘A’ levels. There she studied Biology as an external degree from the University of London. She gained a B.Sc. before entering the field of laboratory research. After her marriage she entered the world of teaching and became Head of Science in a girls’ private boarding school – Piper’s Corner. She raised two boys until they were grown and then, at the age of forty-six, left her job, her house and her family to don a backpack and set off on her overland journey to Australia to visit relations. In total, she backpacked for more than fourteen years through the Americas, Australasia and the Far East, encountering unknown wild beasties, beautiful flowers and chiggers along the way. ‘On the Road to Discovery’ is the first part of that journey.
